How Does KP Compass Work?

KP Compass is an intelligent and completely online student-centered curriculum builder.

This fully customizable online delivery tool enables teachers to quickly and easily build assessable unit plans online for students to access anywhere on the internet. Common functions such as terminology and test building are automatically rendered. To better understand the impact of the unit plan, a blooms analysis is given at the completion of each module.

Unit plans are pre-designed modules built by KP but outside content such as PDF documents, websites, and video can be easily incorporated into KP Compass. The test can be auto-generated or fine-tuned with your own custom test questions. An easy button allows for quick unit plan development based on recommended settings. The auto remediation tool is configured to set the mastery level of any given subject with settings for grade and attempts. Once the unit plan is created it can then be placed in a class or a group.

Students enroll in a specified class or group and access these units on any computer connected to the internet. Students are directed to go through the unit plan which can consist of text, diagrams, videos, animations, activities or tasks. Once the unit is complete, a test will be taken to assess the mastery level of the subject. If the student doesn’t pass with an acceptable grade, the unit plan is restructured to focus on the material the student missed. The unit plan is restructured until the student either passes with an acceptable grade or reaches the maximum attempts. A report of the student’s progress can be viewed on the teacher’s dashboard.

These short YouTube videos will help explain how KP Compass is used by the student, teacher and on an iPad

A Very Brief Overview of KP Compass

KP Compass works on many devices

Using KP Compass on an iPad

The Teacher Dashboard

KP Compass makes it easy for you, the teacher, to build an online course, giving you complete control over your students' PLE experience. Compass lets you create groups and unit plans, add additional materials and questions, set test parameters and get progress reports.

"This is the way curriculum should be designed and deployed." Marlo Loria - Mesa Public Schools

"My students love being able to review the materials and videos at home. Really helped them prepare for their SkillsUSA competition." Pat Doler - Ventura High School

Creating a Class: Develop, Define, and Designate

The teacher dashboard has a number of advanced features and functions. In the simplest terms, KP Compass allows teachers to:

  • Develop, save, and publish unit plans
  • Define groups and classes that have access to the units
  • Designate the mastery levels for student assessment

Adding Content

KP Compass lets you add content such as PDF documents, weblinks, and videos right into your modules. You can blend your materials seamlessly with ours, giving you more flexibility and control over your instructional resources. You can even add your own questions into the test generator and key terms into the auto-term builder.

Generating Bloom's Rated Tests

The KP Compass test generator gives you ultimately flexibility and ease in designing tests and quizzes for your students. Each of our test questions is rated by type and Bloom's classification. You can design balanced tests either by using the quick sliders, or fine tune them with the precision selection of individual questions. A report of your unit plan is available showing the Bloom's analysis and a snapshot of the content. You can also add you own questions and weight them higher or make them mandatory to ensure that they appear in the auto-remediated lessons.

The Auto-Remediation Engine

At the end of each unit plan, the students would go through an auto remediation engine. Each unit plan is set to a mastery level as opposed to being graded on a point scale. The teacher determines the criteria for each level of knowledge and sets the maximum number of test attempts that each student can make. As students continue to learn, their level of comprehension is assessed with "Knowledge Points" and categorized as one of three levels: Novice, Scholar, and Guru. This style will give students an incentive to continue to learn, comprehend, and achieve a higher assessment rating. As the students complete their unit plans, their PLE will continue to grow.

Want to know more? Auto-remediation (level up your score)

The auto-remediation engine is an intelligently-designed feature that gives students a richer learning experience. It doesn't just ask the same questions again until the student gets the right answer! The engine works by determining the specific areas where the student is lacking in knowledge. It then rebuilds the lesson and gives a completely new set of questions on the same concepts. This way, the assessment of student knowledge is made with a higher degree of accuracy and less of the lather, rinse, repeat approach that is often associated with completely online modules.

Student Reporting and Progress

From the teacher dashboard you can retrieve a number of statistics to gauge the effectiveness of the lessons and the level of individual student performance. This data can be accesses at the class, unit plan, student or even page level. Some of the available reports are:

  • The completion percentage and mastery level for the students in each class or unit plan
  • The number of auto-remediation attempts of each student
  • The percentage of times a student or group has answered a question correctly
  • The percentage of questions answered correctly for each page
  • Test Overlay predictor that will guess the students actual test score

These metrics are valuable in helping to make decisions and improve the quality of your lessons. You will be able to analyze which students need individualized attention and to determine which concepts require additional instruction.

Want to know more? Test Overlay

The test overlay lets you create a final test and apply it to a student to give you an indication of their ability to pass the test. Based on the student's progress through the auto-remediated lesson you will see a predicted score and a level of certainty. We know... it sounds a little creepy, but it is actually very useful!
